5 Music Videos that should have prepared us for John Mayer’s Music Video for ‘New Light’

John Mayer recently released a new music video for his song ‘New Light’. He previewed the new video on his Twitter a few days before its release, saying, “I needed to make a video for New Light, but nobody could agree on a budget.” So instead, he went to a place that usually makes Bar Mitzvah videos. Highlight of the video: the entire thing.

You can watch the music video below, but first, here are 5 other music videos from the past that should have prepared us for the ‘New Light’ music video.

1. Oops! I Did It Again by Britney Spears

The music video opens with an astronaut on Mars. He finds an image of Britney Spears on the ground, triggering an ‘earthquake’ that actually ended up being a Britney Spears concert dance routine. The astronaut gets to experience the show of a lifetime, and his team back on Earth get to watch it through his camera. The astronaut returns the image to Britney, only to have her reject him and leave him alone on Mars. She continues to perform for her audience until the song is over.

2. Chattahoochee by Alan Jackson

The video for this legendary song is a mix of a grown Alan water-skiing fully clothed and singing the song in a Cowboy’s jersey, and a young Alan learning about love in his old Chevy. Highlights of the video: Alan “rowing” a tube with his guitar, a young Alan and his friends pulling over to save a turtle on a road, and young Alan and friends driving a truck into a body of water.

3. Rock Lobster by the B-52s

This music video is a bit overwhelming and incredibly hard to explain. You really just need to watch this one for yourself.

4. Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers

The half video game/half real life music video is packed with animated and real-life versions of the band members, all shirtless. The animated versions do strange tricks, like snowboarding down the Golden Gate Bridge, driving a car under water, and surfing on sharks. The real-life versions are playing the song with a wonderful green screen cloudy blue sky. Highlight of this video: definitely two of the members riding through the sky on a dragonfly.

5. Adventure of a Lifetime by Coldplay

The music video for this song is unexpected, to say the least. Coldplay took the music video to the next level by becoming monkeys–animals that are “adventurous” and upbeat, similar to the song. The monkeys were created using advanced editing like from the movie “Avatar”, using members of Coldplay in the CGI suits. The video starts with the monkeys finding a speaker playing the Coldplay song, and then they all start dancing, singing, and eventually performing the hit song. Highlight of the video: the synchronized group dance near the end of the video, along with the close-up shots of the monkeys singing individually.
